Garden Club Sows Seeds For Student Nutrition

The Negros Occidental Garden Club – one of the Philippines’ most active and enduring horticultural organizations – continues to cultivate community engagement in both spirit and soil.
As part of its ongoing outreach programs, the club recently held a Vegetable Seeds Dispersal Activity at Hilarion Gonzaga National High School in Concepcion, Talisay City. The initiative promotes sustainable gardening and supports student nutrition through hands-on cultivation in school gardens.
This seed dispersal activity is also in collaboration with the Negros Island Pearl Lions Club of Bacolod City, headed by its President Rosario “Chit” Alvarez, further strengthening the spirit of civic partnership and shared advocacy for youth wellness.
In close coordination with Principal Ma. Teresa Pido and the school’s agriculture teaching staff, club members distributed a wide variety of vegetable seeds, including string beans, okra (gumbo), eggplants, sigarilyas (winged beans), bitter gourd, patola (sponge gourd), and bottle gourd.
The school expressed heartfelt appreciation for the donation, recognizing its value in enriching their garden program and enhancing student well-being.
“The vegetables grown from these seeds will not only serve as a learning tool for the students, but will also help meet their nutritional needs,” said club president Lope “Nonoy” Napao.
For over 60 years, the Negros Occidental Garden Club has been a beacon of civic involvement, blending horticultural expertise with a deep commitment to education, health, and sustainability. This latest initiative reaffirms the club’s mission to nurture greener futures – one garden at a time.* (Robert Harland)
