Gov. Lacson Highlights Shrimp Industry’s Economic Impact

Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose “Bong” Lacson joined the opening of the 15th Philippine Shrimp Congress in Bacolod City Wednesday morning at SMX Convention Center in Bacolod and highlighted the industry’s significant contribution to both the national and local economy.
The activity, held at the SMX Convention Center, was spearheaded by Philippine Shrimp Industry (PHILSHRIMP), Inc. led by its president, Joseph Edgar Sarrosa and 15th Congress Chairman Katrina Vergara, in collaboration with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources VI and the Negros Prawn Producers Cooperative.
The Oct. 8 -10 Congress brings together stakeholders from the shrimp industry nationwide, including shrimp farmers, processors, exporters, suppliers, researchers, and government agencies, to discuss current trends, challenges, and opportunities in shrimp production and trade.
Gov. Lacson said that the Philippine shrimp industry has long been a strong contributor to national development, providing livelihoods and enhancing food security, and that its success directly affects not only the livelihoods of thousands of Negrenses but also the strength and stability of the local economy.
“Beyond its economic value, shrimp farming carries a deep social and community impact. It supports rural livelihoods and reinforces our goal of inclusive growth,” he said.
He also cited that through partnerships such as the Shrimp Congress where science meets sustainability and private initiative aligns with public purpose collective resolve is found.
This year’s congress is themed “Strategic Adaptations to Climate Change for a Resilient and Progressive Philippine Shrimp Industry.”*
