Gov. Cup 5X5 Basketball tourney gets ready for semis, finals

The final battle of the ABANSE NEGRENSE Governor’s Cup 5X5 Basketball Tournament (A Tribute to Dodong Bascon’s Contributions to Negros Basketball) is drawing near. The tournament’s organizer, the Provincial Sports Office, is preparing for the last round of elimination and its semi-finals on December 3-4, (Saturday and Sunday) at the STI-West Negros University (STI-WNU) Gymnasium in Bacolod City.

Before the tournament’s finale next weekend, it recently held another round of elimination on November 30, Wednesday. Despite being a holiday, basketball fanatics in the metro witnessed exciting games between 10 teams who are vying to qualify for the semi-finals.

In the first game, however, Escalante City was declared Loss by Forfeiture versus the municipality of E.B. Magalona. Bacolod City triumphed with a 20-point lead over Silay City in the second game, scoring 78-58. In the third game, the University of Negros Occidental – Recoletos (UNO-R) defeated the Cadiz City team with a score of 94-85.

Another team ended up in Loss by Forfeiture in the fourth game when Talisay City was a “no show” against Colegio San Agustin – Bacolod. For the final game, the STI-West Negros University (STI-WNU) team emerged victorious in a very close one-point lead against La Consolacion College – Bacolod (LCC-B), resulting in a 96-95 scoresheet.

Meanwhile, the ABANSE NEGRENSE Governor’s Cup 5X5 Basketball Tournament championship will be on December 10, Saturday.

Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose V. Lacson and Provincial Sports Office Head Anthony Carlo Agustin will reportedly attend the championship at the STI-West Negros University Gymnasium, Bacolod City.

This tournament is part of Gov. Bong Lacson’s brainchild, the ABANSE NEGRENSE Grassroots Sports Development Programs. With these initiatives, the sports-advocate governor reminds the Negrense youth to put equal importance on education and their passion for sports.* (PSO)
