Update city’s 10-year solid waste management plan

The City Government of Bacolod has partnered with SyCip Gorres Velayo & Co. (SGV) to conduct a Waste Analysis and Characterization Study (WACS), a key initiative aimed at updating the city’s 10-year Solid Waste Management Plan.

The formal agreement for this partnership was signed Thursday, May 14, at L’Fisher Hotel.

Mayor Greg Gasataya said the collaboration is a vital step toward enhancing the city’s waste management system, ensuring that future solutions are both environmentally friendly and grounded in reliable data and research.

As one of the country’s leading professional services firms, SGV will provide technical expertise for the study to ensure that the updated Solid Waste Management Plan is based on accurate data and tailored specifically to the city’s needs.

The study will gather critical information on the types and volume of waste produced daily in the city. It will also project future waste generation trends and recommend ways to improve waste collection, recycling, composting, and disposal systems.

“This project is more than just a study. It is a crucial step toward transforming how Bacolod manages its waste. This will help the city create solutions that are not only environmentally sound but also economically sustainable,” said Katrina Francisco, Climate Change and Sustainability Services Partner of SGV.

Mayor Gasataya added that the project aims to deepen understanding of the city’s waste situation — including composition, volume, and projected growth — to develop smarter and more sustainable solutions.

“This study will help us clearly understand how much waste Bacolod produces and what steps we need to take to improve our waste management systems and policies,” the mayor said.

With an allocated budget of P3.75 million, the study forms part of the city government’s broader efforts to strengthen Bacolod’s long-term waste management program.

Mayor Gasataya noted that the initiative is essential in addressing waste challenges and in building a cleaner, more organized, and more resilient city.

The city government also thanked SGV Managing Partner Rossana Fajardo, along with experts Katrina Francisco and Djole Garcia, for their support and commitment in helping Bacolod develop stronger environmental policies.* (BCCO text & photos)
