Tikang reinforces long-term commitment to community empowerment, sustainable growth
Three years after its first intervention, the tikang team continued to deliver concrete gains in a former conflict-ridden sitio in Himamaylan City—this time with new support for the children and the environment.
On September 6, the tikang team—a coalition of Hope Builders Organization Negros Island Inc. (HBONI), the 94th Infantry Battalion, Brigada News FM, and youth volunteers, returned to Sitio Madaja, Barangay Buenavista, in Himamaylan City, to reinforce its long-term commitment to community empowerment and sustainable growth.
“Tikang,” the Hiligaynon word for “step,” embodies the initiative’s mission of moving steadily toward a progressive community.
A major highlight of the visit was the blessing of the Madaha Hand Weavers Association’s new Multi-Purpose Hall, a facility meant to preserve weaving traditions while creating more livelihood opportunities.
The team carried out an assessment to back the community’s inclusion in the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) Community Empowerment Through Science and Technology (CEST) Program, with focus on improving digital connectivity and environmental preservation.
The mission also distributed more than a hundred bottles of Yummy Vit ES2 oral drops and tackled plans for future Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) and environmental protection initiatives.
Meanwhile, Bantay Gubat volunteers are expected to receive gear and resources to boost their forest protection efforts, once the DOST-CEST program pushes through.
“The progress we’ve witnessed in Sitio Madaha since 2022 is remarkable,” said Community Development Consultant Sybel Nobleza. “From an elementary school and a basketball court to this new multi-purpose hall, these milestones reflect the resilience of the people. The team will continue to walk with them in building a stronger future.”
94th Infantry commander Ziegfred D. Tayaban, stressed the Army’s support for inclusive development.
“The 94IB stands with our partners and the people of Sitio Madaja in their journey toward peace and progress. Beyond security, our mission is to help communities reach their full potential through education, livelihood, and sustainable programs. Together with the Tikang team, we will keep building hope and a better future,” he said.* (Reymund Titong)
