Leonel Mabaquiao: 17 attempts to a dream

January 28, 2026

Leonel Mabaquiao, 36, graduated from Philippine Normal University Visayas in 2010 with one goal: to become a licensed teacher.

He took the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) for the first time that September.

What followed was a journey of 12 years and 17 attempts. He traveled to Cebu, Iloilo, and Bacolod to take the exam. Each attempt tested his knowledge, patience, faith, and strength.

Before he had a family, he accepted that failing was part of the process. After becoming a husband and father, passing the LET became a way to provide stability and a better future for his family.

There were moments of tears and quiet embarrassment, especially when others passed. Leonel never blamed anyone.

He struggled silently and trusted God’s timing. He prayed in many churches. On one exam trip to Bacolod, while praying at Lupit Church, he felt a calm assurance that he would pass.

In March 2022, that assurance came true. When his sister told him to check the results, he saw his name on the list. He cried, ran, and thanked God.

Years of effort and sacrifice had finally paid off. Leonel had become a Professional Teacher.

Soon after, he served as a LET proctor and later as a proctor for CSC and NAPOLCOM exams. Standing before examinees, he saw his past self and felt honored to guide them.

He also shared his story with friends who had lost hope, reminding them that passing is possible even after many attempts. Many of them eventually passed, inspired by his persistence.

Leonel remains thankful to God, his family, and friends. His story shows that success is not about speed, but about continuing to try.

For those still chasing their dreams, his message is simple: keep going, keep believing, and never stop trying. Your time will come.* (ERM)
