PSO reveals teams to participate in Gov. Cup 5X5 basketball tourney

October 27, 2022

The Negros Occidental Provincial Government and the Provincial Sports Office have continued their preparations for the upcoming Governor’s Cup 5X5 Basketball Tournament (A Tribute to Dodong Bascon’s Contributions to Negros Basketball) this November. As part of their efforts, PSO Head Mr. Anthony Carlo Agustin has convened a final meeting with the coaches of the participating teams on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at the PSO Office.

Mr. Agustin, together with PSO Basketball Sports Coordinator Coach Arvin Custer Gustilo revealed there will be a total of 12 participating teams instead of the limited eight slots, as previously announced. The reason for the additional participants was the fact that many LGUs expressed their interest in joining the tournament.

Among the teams that have confirmed their participation were Cadiz City, Dumaguete City, Talisay City, University of Negros Occidental-Recolotes (UNO-R), and Collegio de San Agustin-Bacolod (CSA-B). And the teams belonged to the Bracket A category.

For Bracket B, the teams included were Silay City, La Consolacion College (LCC), STI-West Negros University (STI-WNU), and Bago City. Three more teams – La Carlota City, Escalante City, and the Warriors – have also expressed their intention to join the tournament and they are set to be bracketed during the Oct. 26 meeting.

The coaches of the respective teams should also submit the PSA Birth Certificate, vaccine cards, and waivers as the deadline was set during the meeting. The locations of the ballgames will also be discussed.

Moreover, each participating team is also requested to have a muse. Each muse will represent and accompany the team during the opening ceremony, which is scheduled in Talisay City on Nov. 12 at 1 pm.

Meanwhile, the upcoming Governor’s Cup 5X5 Basketball Tournament is one of the ABANSE NEGRENSE Sports Programs slated for this last quarter of 2022. The competitions are part of the grassroots sports development initiative spearheaded by Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose V. Lacson.

The said tournament is also organized in memory of the late Mr. Oscar “Dodong” Bascon, who was deemed one of the pillars of basketball in Negros Occidental. Gov. Lacson and the PSO are hoping the tournament will serve as a developmental tool in teaching values, life skills and principles, and serve as a pathway for developing teamwork, leadership, trust, play ethics, camaraderie, sportsmanship, goodwill, and discipline.* (PSO)
