Gov. Cup football qualifiers kicked off final leg

The ABANSE NEGRENSE football tournament organized by the Provincial Sports Office (PSO) was getting exciting as it reached the final leg of its qualifying matches on Oct. 22-23, 2022 (Saturday and Sunday). The cities of Sagay and Bago hosted the games for the North, South, and Central Negros Districts.

It was another bustling yet fun-filled weekend for the Negrense “ultras” as they cheered on their respective teams for support. During the Governor’s Cup Football Championship Qualifying (North Negros) in Sagay City, San Carlos City topped the Born 2010 (12-under boys, 9-a-side with offside category) with a score of 12-0 against the city of Escalante.

For the Born 2005 (17-under boys, 11-a-side with offside category), Victorias City earned three goals against Escalante City. Pontevedra was also victorious against SSA Universal with a score of 2-0, while the University of St. La Salle FC had seven goals against Talisay City in the South and Central Negros Districts.

The teams that were qualified for the quarter-finals on Oct. 30 at the Pana-ad Park and Stadium were USLS-IS, STI-WNU, Bago City, Pontevedra, San Carlos City, Cadiz City, Sagay City, and Club de Hermanos de Futbol (CHFC-Escalante City) for the Born 2005 age category.

For the Born 2010 Boys, the qualified teams were San Carlos City, Sagay City, Cadiz City, Victorias City, Dolphins FC, Pontevedra, Bago City, and Trinity Christian School.

Following the qualifying and quarterfinals, the Governor’s Cup Football Provincial Championship will continue its semi-finals and finals on Oct. 31 and Nov. 5 at the Pana-ad Park and Stadium in Brgy. Alijis.

The recent football tournaments are among the ABANSE NEGRENSE Sports Programs, which was spearheaded by Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose V. Lacson. The initiative hopes to promote grassroots sports development among the LGUs in the province.* (PSO)
