Governor calls on PNP to arrest suspects in killing of two brgy. captains

Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose called on the Philippine National Police “to identify and apprehend the soonest possible time the suspects who killed last week two barangay chairmen in the province.

“I condemn the killing of Brgy. Capt. Danilo Dautil of Cabcab, Isabela and Brgy Capt. Benjamin Javoc of Lalong, Calatrava,” Gov. Lacson said, adding that he condoles with their families.
“Rest assured, the provincial government will assist both families,” he said.

Dautil, 62, of Brgy. Cabcab was shot dead by an unknown assailant on Wednesday, while Javoc, 54, of Lalong was killed by unidentified suspects early Friday morning.

Dautil succumbed to two gunshot wounds at the back of his head and near his right armpit, after he was shot by an unidentified gunman while on his way home, on board his motorcycle in Brgy. Cabcab, about 18 kilometers from the poblacion of Isabela town, police said.

P/Capt. Joseph Partidas, Isabela police chief, said that Dautil was declared dead on arrival at the Ignacio Lopez Arroyo Sr. Memorial District Hospital in the town.

Javoc was gunned down by an unidentified suspect at about 5:30 Friday morning, August 26.
P/Major Lidawan Lumyaen, Calatrava police chief, said that Javoc was shot dead and his P20,000 cash was taken by the suspect.

Investigators are looking at insurgency as possible motives.

The governor, saying that nobody is entitled to take the law into his own hand. When asked if he agrees to arming village officials, he said he is “for responsible gun ownership.”

“While it may give our barangay captains a chance to defend themselves, it also makes them very attractive for agaw armas,” Lacson said.* (EYA)
