The Waling-Waling Group of the Negros Occidental Garden Club were the gracious hosts of the club’s September general assembly, held recently at the Acacia Hotel in Bacolod City.

Jicama – a nutritional powerhouse waiting to be rediscovered can make a great alternative to French fries.*

Led by chairperson Engr. Ilde Guerrero, the group delivered a captivating presentation on an often-overlooked nutritional gem: jicama, or singkamas.

Also known as the Mexican turnip – though unrelated to actual turnips – jicama is crisp, subtly sweet and refreshingly hydrating. It’s packed with dietary fiber, especially inulin, a prebiotic that supports gut health, along with vitamin C and potassium to boost immunity and heart function.

With its low calorie count and 85% water content, jicama is a smart choice for warm climates, recovery meals and guilt-free snacking. Whether enjoyed raw with salt, tossed into salads, or added to local dishes like sinigang, jicama offers a delicious reminder that wellness can be homegrown.

After the formal program, the Waling-Waling group surprised members with a lively Mexican-themed song and dance number – an unexpected encore that drew smiles and applause. The gathering was a joyful celebration of health, heritage and the kind of fellowship that flourishes when learning is paired with flair.*
