Florence Nightingale Remembered
Bacolod City resident and trained nurse, Stessie Hecita Harland, recently paid a heartfelt tribute to nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale at her final resting place – St. Margaret’s Church, a medieval sanctuary in the village of East Wellow, Hampshire, England.
During her visit, Mrs Harland was warmly welcomed by one of the church’s vicars, the Reverend Sara-Jane Stevens, who explained how Nightingale’s grave draws visitors from across the globe. Among them are many members of the Filipino nursing community, who make the pilgrimage to honor her enduring legacy.
Each year, the church holds a Florence Nightingale Commemoration Service, where the vicar dons a beautifully embroidered cope adorned with emblems that reflect Nightingale’s remarkable life and contributions to nursing. On this occasion, Reverend Stevens graciously invited Mrs Harland to try on the ceremonial vestment – an experience she received with great humility and pride.* (Robert Harland)
