October 14, 2023

More or less 100 Grade 7 students of the Dr. Vicente F. Gustilo Memorial National High School actively participated in the Dalaw Turo spearheaded by PENRO Negros Occidental.

The Dalaw Turo Team composed of members from PENRO Negros Occidental, CENRO Bago and CENRO Cadiz, lined-up activities and lectures regarding environmental protection and conservation. Dalaw Turo, which comes from two Filipino words that mean “to visit” (dalaw) and “to teach” (turo) is an educational tool for teaching and promoting environmental messages on nature conservation.

“We are all connected to one another,” Dindo M. Ampalla, Principal IV of DVFGMNHS said. He also emphasized that the students should apply all that they will learn in order to influence their peers, their family and the whole community to take good care our environment. Science Department Head Ma. Hiyas J. Viason in her message expressed gratitude to DENR PENRO Negros Occidental and the rest of the Dalaw Turo Team to meet with all the students and motivate them to be better.

A lot of young minds and hearts were opened as they listen to the lecture about the environment and what they can do to also encourage others to be good stewards of the Earth. The students were made fully aware of the current status of our environment and encouraged them to be eco-warriors in their area. Information materials regarding RA 9003, Anti-burning Law and Protected Areas were also distributed and given to their Environment Science Teacher and YES-O Adviser Anacel Recuelo.

Their voices echoed with cheer, laughter and enthusiasm as they join in the environmental games and activities prepared for them. One of the highlights of the program was the commitment signing and responses from the students on what they learned and pledged to positively impact the community and the environment.

Through all of these, we are hopeful that we have imparted messages and information about our environment and how to conserve and protect them for the next generation.

As what they proudly and strongly chanted, “Kalikasan pangalagaan, para sa Kinabukasan, dahil Ikaw, Ako, Tayo ang Kalikasan!”* (DENR PENRO)
