STI WNU Student Brings Home 4 Medals From Batang Pinoy 2025

Chess prodigy Ellaine Summer Abanco, a student of STI West Negros University in Bacolod, made the Ilonggo community proud after securing four medals in the recently concluded Batang Pinoy National Championships held in General Santos City.

Representing the Province of Iloilo, Abanco captured one gold, one silver, and two bronze medals in the Under-14 Girls Chess Division, showcasing her exceptional skill and competitive spirit.

Abanco was previously part of the Negros Occidental Delegation, but was welcomed by the Province of Iloilo, which gave her the opportunity to compete under their banner. With Iloilo’s support and encouragement, she delivered an outstanding performance that brought pride to both her school and the Ilonggo chess community.

Behind Ellaine’s success are her parents, Stellar and Ernie Abanco, who serve as her coaches and mentors. Both are former varsity chess players whose guidance and dedication have helped shape her journey in the sport.
