PHIVOLCS Conducts Training in Negros on Communicating Volcano, Earthquake, Tsunami Hazards

The Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) is conducting another leg of training on Communicating Volcano, Earthquake, and Tsunami Hazards for Junior High School Teachers of DepEd Canlaon City, Guihulngan City, and Negros Oriental on May 27-29, 2025 at Southview Hotel in Dumaguete City.

In his message, Dr. Teresito C. Bacolcol, DOST-PHIVOLCS Director, said that educators teaching their students with hands-on activities and discussions will help their students make sense of disasters and how to prepare for them.

Meanwhile, Jeffrey S. Perez, Supervising Science Research Specialist (SRS) of DOST-PHIVOLCS, talked about an overview of Plate Tectonics followed by Earthquakes, Active Faults, and other Earthquake Sources in the region.

In the afternoon, Ms. Ma. Antonia V. Bornas, Chief SRS of the Volcano Monitoring and Eruption Prediction Division of DOST-PHIVOLCS, lectured on Volcanoes, Volcanic Hazards, and Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Measures.

To finish the set of lectures of the day, Engr. Mary-Andylene Quintia, resident volcanologist of Kanlaon Volcano Observatory, mentored the participants on Understanding Volcano Alert Levels.* (DOST-PHIVOLCS)
