Lahar Flow From Mt. Kanlaon Still Expected

The Office of Civil Defense in Negros Island Region believes that lahar from Kanlaon Volcano will continue to flow into Barangsy Biak-na-Bato in La Castellana town in Negros Occidental.

Donato Sermeno, regional director of OCD-NIR, on Monday said that lahar and debris continue to accumulate through the river that passes the upland village.

“It will flow as strong rains continue to pour in the area,” Sermeno said.

He said that they visited Brgy. Biak-na-Bato on Sunday and saw that one house was totally damaged while seven others were partially damaged.

The partially damaged houses were caused by soil erosion as they were located at the river’s edge, he said.

He added that the OCD is continuously monitoring the area with afternoon rains prevailing.* (NDB)
