PNVF Wraps Up Referee Course in San Carlos City

May 6, 2025

The Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) officially concluded its six-day National Referee Candidate and Refresher Course last night, May 5, at the San Carlos City Auditorium.

The course gathered at least 144 participants from 22 cities and municipalities, where they underwent written and practical exams, including group-based officiating rotations, signal demonstrations, and judgment timing drills which are components designed to simulate real match pressure and assess accuracy under time constraints to develop first-time referees and refresh the skills of licensed ones.

PNVF Membership Committee Chair Coach Roger Banzuela, PNVF Referee and Rules of the Game Chairman Yul Benosa, International Referees Janus Dumaran and Garry Jamili, and PNVF National Referee Rene Gaspillo facilitated the sessions and graded participants during practical activities, where referees rotated through all officiating roles such as first and second referee, scorer, line judge, and ball retriever before proceeding to their final assessments.

Banzuela stressed the need for continuous training to enhance officiating and build a new generation of referees, especially young women who are often underrepresented in high-level matches; encouraged participants to stay active in local games, emphasizing that consistent practice and commitment open doors to national and international opportunities; pointed out that San Carlos City, as it will soon be a part of the Negros Island Region (NIR), is emerging as an ideal location for sports events, offering excellent facilities, a welcoming environment, and strong potential to grow in the country’s sports development efforts.

Mayor Renato Y. Gustilo thanked PNVF for choosing San Carlos City as the venue for the event, expressing hope for similar events to be held in the future, particularly for coaches.

He also thanked the participants, especially those who traveled from as far as Zamboanga, for visiting San Carlos and for their dedication to improving their officiating skills.

The closing ceremony included the awarding of certificates to the participants and plaques of appreciation to the speakers and SCCUPVA, led by Mayor Gustilo and PNVF Officials.* (San Carlos City, Neg.Occ. LGU Information Page text & photos)
