Phivolcs to announce crater glow events
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS-DOST) clarified that photos circulating online, which were claimed to show Kanlaon’s crater glow, actually depict a “super-heated plume.”
In a statement quoted by the Philippine Information Agency, Volcano Monitoring and Eruption Prediction Division chief Ma. Antonia Bornas explained that PHIVOLCS has been detecting these superheated plumes since November 2024.
Bornas emphasized that cameras with infrared capabilities are able to detect the superheated plumes.
She also reassured the public that PHIVOLCS will officially announce any crater glow events, which would indicate a lava flow or lava fountaining, similar to past volcanic activity.* (W/PIA)
