Governor calls for intensified anti-dengue drive
Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson is calling for an intensified campaign against dengue amid the spike of cases in Negros Occidental.
Lacson, on Monday, said that after the increase is dengue cases last year “there is still a spike.”
We have followed the same protocols, he said, adding that he is reminding the public.
“It’s not rocket science to prevent dengue. It’s all about cleaning your community. No stagnant water and if anyone feels sick especially the children they should right away have themselves checked at the nearest rural health clinics,” the governor pointed out.
It should be the mindset of the communities, he said, adding that if one has a fever he should be checked if it is dengue or not.
A total of 250 dengue cases were reported from January 1 to 18, 2025, an increase of 297 percent compared to 63 cases in the same period last year.
Two fatalities have been reported to date.
Bago City reported the highest number of dengue cases in January at 58, followed by San Carlos City with 20 cases, Kabankalan City – 19, Pulupandan – 15, Silay City – 13, Valladolid – 11 and La Carlota City – 10.
In 2024, Negros Occidental had 6,799 dengue cases, which were 354.48 percent more than in 2023, according to health officials.
There were also 22 dengue related deaths in 2024.
In response to the alarming rise in dengue cases in the province, the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Negros Occidental-Bacolod City Chapter is intensifying its efforts to combat the health threat.
“Our campaign focuses on raising awareness about dengue prevention, emphasizing the importance of eliminating mosquito breeding sites, and promoting cleanliness in homes and communities. By regularly cleaning gutters, disposing of stagnant water, and covering water containers, we can collectively stop the spread of the disease,” said the PRC-Negros Occidental.
The agency also encourages everyone to familiarize themselves with the symptoms of dengue, such as high fever, severe headache, rashes, and muscle pain, and to seek medical attention promptly if needed.
“Let us unite to protect our families and communities,” the PRC added.* (EYA)
