8 Former Rebels Get Assistance from Sagay, Escalante Task Force-ELCAC, 79IB

BATO, Sagay City – In a powerful demonstration of the government’s commitment to Peace and Reconciliation, eight former rebels who recently gave up and abandoned the path of conflict were given financial and food assistance by the Philippine Army’s 79th Infantry (Masaligan) Battalion, in partnership with the Sagay and Escalante City Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (CTF-ELCAC).

The simple yet significant ceremony took place at the 79IB Headquarters in Brgy. Bato, Sagay City, Negros Occidental, on Tuesday, September 3, 2024.

The event was graced by the Chairperson of Sagay City Task Force – ELCAC, Mayor Narciso L. Javelosa Jr., who led the distribution of assistance alongside 79IB Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Arnel P. Calaoagan, PA, and Sagay Chief of Police, PLt.Col. John A. Mocyat.

Their presence underscored the strong collaborative efforts between the military, local government units, law enforcement agencies including the media partners in fostering peace and stability in the Region., the 79th IB stated .

In his address, Mayor Javelosa commended the former rebels for their courageous decision to surrender and reintegrate into the society. He reaffirmed his administration’s on-going commitment to provide support to those who choose to leave the armed struggle, encouraging other members of the Communist Terrorist Group (CTG) to follow the said initiatives. “This act of surrender is not only a step towards personal peace but also a significant contribution to the collective peace and progress of Northern Negros,” Mayor Javelosa emphasized.

Lieutenant Colonel Calaoagan echoed the sentiments of Mayor Javelosa, expressing profound gratitude to the local government units of Sagay and Escalante City, as well as other stakeholders, for their unwavering support. He highlighted the importance of collaboration in the fight against insurgency, noting that such partnerships are crucial in helping former rebels rebuild their lives and reintegrate into their communities.

“The 79IB, in collaboration with the City Governments of Sagay and Escalante City, as well as other government agencies, the media and the PNP, is dedicated to working together to end the insurgency, embrace peace, and focus on building a peaceful and prosperous life for all, especially for those who have chosen to return to the fold of the law,” said Lt. Col. Calaoagan.

This initiative by the 79th Infantry (MASALIGAN) Battalion, in partnership with CTF-ELCAC and other key stakeholders, is a testament to their collective commitment to addressing the needs of former rebels. It aims to provide them with the necessary resources to start anew and contribute positively to community development. The assistance not only supports their immediate needs but also symbolizes a renewed hope for a dignified life as reintegrated citizens. Moreover, this gesture serves as a compelling message to others still involved in armed conflict, urging them to abandon the path of violence and choose peace as a way forward.

The ceremony concluded with a renewed call for peace, with local officials, military and PNP leaders reiterating their commitment to continue supporting former rebels in their journey towards a better future. As the 79IB and its partners continue their efforts, they remain hopeful that more individuals will be inspired to lay down their arms and work towards a peaceful and progressive Northern Negros.* (W/79IB SMP)
