Improving Filipino students’ performance in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) is a high priority for the Department of Education. In recent years the Philippines has struggled to make the grade in STEM education as compared to other countries.

Under the leadership of past president Dr. Eric Malo-oy, the Rotary Club of Bacolod-Marapara has been donating books as part of the club’s plans to increase student interest in STEM programs.

In collaboration with the Technological University of the Philippines Visayas (TUPV), the club recently donated some 700 STEM books to students and teachers at the Eva J Montilla Farm School, in the municipality of Cauayan.

“In order to prepare for jobs, students need to be able to solve problems, find and use evidence, collaborate on projects and think critically. Skills that are taught in STEM subjects, said Dr. Malo-oy.

“We as Rotarians were pleased to make these small contributions to help students together with our partners.”

The STEM books were turned over to the principal, Dr. Loribel S. Montano. The schools has a population of 1,300 juniors and seniors students. This project is under the Rotary International area of focus on Basic Education.* (Robert Harland)
