Groups ramp up efforts for Himamaylan’s former NPA stronghold sitio
Various groups across Negros Occidental ramped up relief efforts for community members of Sitio Madaja in Barangay Buenavista, Himamaylan City, on August 24, aimed at advancing the community towards greater development and progress.
The Association of Negros Producers (ANP) provided 90 packs of school supplies and conducted a product monitoring session for the Madaja Handweavers Association (MAHAWA). MAHAWA specializes in crafting products from tikog, a type of red grass, and is preparing for its participation in the 38th Negros Trade Fair in Manila.
ANP, a non-governmental organization founded during the 1980s sugar crisis, has been instrumental in supporting rural families in a mono-crop economy by helping them diversify their livelihood activities.
The Army’s 94th Infantry Battalion first organized the weavers into MAHAWA, which was officially registered with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in 2023. Despite challenges such as logistical issues in transporting woven items, ANP continued to provide training to enhance the weavers’ skills.
Sharon Jornadal, executive director of the Felix Yusay G. Foundation, also led the distribution of 90 essential food packs and additional school supplies for children, providing a vital boost to families in need.
Adding a touch of joy, the Hope Builders Organization Negros Island (HBONI), organized engaging activities for children in the community, including storytelling, interactive dance, and various games.
ANP’s External Affairs Manager, Sybel Nobleza, expressed her appreciation for the significant involvement of stakeholders in the community since 2022. “It is a testament to the growing commitment to supporting this community,” she told Brigada News FM-Kabankalan.
Sitio Madaja was previously considered a stronghold of communist rebels but declared conflict-free in 2021. The remote location of the area had historically impeded residents’ access to essential government services and aid.
Nobleza also highlighted the efforts of the members of the Community Rescue and Disaster Emergency Services (COMRADES) from Central Philippines State University, who conducted a hygiene awareness session. Local officials of Buenavista village also attended the stakeholders visit, alongside the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) Negros Occidental 2.
94th Infantry Battalion chief Lieutenant Colonel Ziegfred Tayaban said, “This collaborative effort underscores the importance of working together to address the needs of marginalized communities. The support from various stakeholders not only brought tangible resources but also instilled hope and encouragement among the residents of Sitio Madaja”.* (Reymund. Titong)
