UniTeam’s dissolution has no affect in local politics, says Gov. Lacson

June 20, 2024

The dissolution of the UniTeam will not affect the local politics in the province.

Thus said Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson in an interview with reporters Thursday.

The UniTeam was an electoral alliance formed to support the candidacies of Bongbong Marcos and Sara Duterte in the 2022 presidential and vice-presidential elections and their allies in the 2022 general election. The alliance was formalized on November 29, 2021.

Gov. Lacson said the resignation of Vice President Sara Duterte as secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd) and Vice Chair of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC), “shows a clearer picture of the separation of Uniteam. It is not unified anymore.”

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. and Duterte won in the 2022 elections under the UniTeam Alliance.

The governor said that it is Duterte’s prerogative to resign although the Vice President did not explain why.

“The more relevant question is what will happen to the Matatag program that she introduced in DepEd. Will the next DepEd Secretary continue that program because basically there is only fours years left,” Lacson said, adding that it is important to immediately appoint a new DepEd Secretary.* (NBCG)
