April 27, 2024

BACOLOD CITY – In a remarkable effort to combat the rising tide of online hate speech, Leah Isabelle Serran, an ABCO 4A student at the University of St. La Salle, spearheaded a pioneering advocacy event titled “PeaceBook.” The event took place this morning, April 26 from 8:30 to 11:30 am at the gymnasium of Domingo Lacson National High School, engaging a total of 45 students from the school.

The initiative, led by Leah, sought to educate young minds about the importance of responsible online behavior and the adverse effects of hate speech on individuals’ well-being and emotions. Joining Leah were two distinguished guest speakers, Khristian Rich Fong and John Alfred Lucot, who shared insights on the significance of proper netiquette and the profound impact of hate speech in the digital age.

During the event, participants actively engaged in discussions, games, and shared personal experiences related to encountering hate speech online. The interactive format encouraged open dialogue and provided practical tips on fostering a more respectful and inclusive online community.

The culmination of the event was marked by a rewarding ceremony, where certificates of appreciation and tokens of gratitude were presented to the guest speakers, recognizing their valuable contributions to the cause. In addition, students from Domingo Lacson National High School were treated to refreshments, fostering a spirit of camaraderie and goodwill.

Leah Isabelle Serran, the visionary behind “PeaceBook,” expressed her optimism about the impact of the event, stating, “Our goal is to help young people become positive forces for change on the internet. By teaching about the impact of hate speech, we want to create a digital world where everyone treats each other with kindness, care, and understanding.”

The initiative not only sheds light on the critical issue of online hate speech but also underscores the importance of youth-led initiatives in shaping a more compassionate and inclusive society. Leah’s dedication and leadership serve as an inspiration to her peers and communities alike, highlighting the transformative power of advocacy in addressing contemporary challenges.

As the curtains drew to a close on “PeaceBook,” the echoes of meaningful discussions continue to resonate, igniting hope for a future where digital spaces are characterized by kindness and mutual respect.*
