The UAAP Season 86 had just concluded last Wednesday, December 6, with De La Salle University winning the championship 2-1, with a hard fought 73-69 victory over the UP Fighting Maroons to clinch their 10th Men’s basketball crown and their first since 2016. Big Man Kevin Quiambao proved his worth as a worthy UAAP Season Most Valuable Player by scoring 24 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks to lead the Archers in the Game 3 decider, en route to also winning the UAAP Finals MVP trophy. He was backstopped by spitfire guard Evan Nellie, who added 12 points and 7 assists as well as Michael Phillips, who grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds. UP was led by big man Malik Diouf, who put up a double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds in his last game for the school. Blue-chip rookie Francis Lopez added 12 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 assists, and 3 blocks while point guard Harold Alarcon had 10 points. UP proved that they are no longer the perennial doormat or whipping team of the UAAP in years past with its 3rd straight UAAP Finals appearance. The deciding game 3 of the UAAP Finals also set an attendance record with more than 25,000 fans attending the game. It was also a UAAP season full of surprises, the biggest of which was the defending champion Ateneo Blue Eagles missing the Finals for the first time under head coach Tab Baldwin after losing to the Fighting Maroons in the Final Four.

The first NBA in-season tournament had just concluded with the Los Angeles Lakers beating the Indiana Pacers 123-109 in the Finals en route to winning the trophy, Anthony Davis scored 41 points and grabbed 20 rebounds while in-season tournament MVP Lebron James added 24 points and 11 rebounds as the Lakers superstar duo led their team to victory. The first NBA in-season tournament was a success as it was a tournament done in the middle of the season, similar to what we see in football in Europe, where you can see the likes of the FA Cup. Copa Del Ray, French Cup act as in-season football tourneys to the English Premier League, La Liga and Ligue 1 as well as other domestic football leagues who have their own in-season tournaments. However it was met with a lot of criticism, one of which was the Finals of the tournament not counted in the regular season standings as well as the courts being changed to weird and bright colors which made for painful viewing for TV and Internet viewers. Another criticism was the single round robin format and the East and West bracketing of the teams, which was vastly different from the bracket we see in the regular NBA season. There were fears teams wont take the tournament seriously but it was the opposite as many cardiac games and playoff-type intensity was displayed during the tournament as almost all of the teams refused to lose. But overall, I can say the tournament was quite a success with the quality of basketball being displayed.*
