SRA must explain high prices of sugar despite importation

The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) must explain the high prices of sugar despite importation.

Third District Rep. Jose Francisco Benitez also told newsmen today that he wants to hear the justification of SRA. “But I suspect there is a process and a gap between mill gate prices and consumer prices that needs to be looked into why the price management system of SRA is still lacking in terms of effectivity.”

“I dont neccessarily think it’s unabated. It usually goes through a process where they calculate how much sugar is present and how much sugar they predict will be produced and will be needed by the local market particularly by the industrial users,” he also said during an interview with Bacolod newsmen at his office in the House of Representatives this afternoon.

“We cannot say unabated but it seems to be continuing but I think that’s partly because the price of sugar is still high in the market. Which I cannot understand despite of the regular and continues importation which should in theory bring down the prices in the market and not in the mill gate prices of sugar,” the congressman also said.*
