Himamaylan Keeps Soaring High, Hosts Another National Event
Himamaylan City continues to enjoy the spotlight in the southern part of Negros Occidental as it hosts another major national event, this time in the arena of sports development, the Mayor Raymund Tongson NATIONAL YOUTH & SCHOOLS CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS (Under 9, U11, U13, U15, U17 Boys & Girls) at the City Hall.
Mayor Tongson said that with the hosting of the April 14 to 17 chess tournament that brings together the best young chess players from all over the country to Himamaylan, this is another proof that the city is peaceful and maintains its momentum towards development and progress that redounds to Himamaylanons.
Recently, the city also hosted other national and as well as provincial events that gathered thousands of participants and visitors to the brightest local government unit in the south, such as the biking and scouting events, the very recent Himaya festival, and the series of concerts that drew thousands.
Soon, another major event will be held in Himamaylan, Mayor Tongson said.
NATIONAL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP
Meanwhile, Event Officer Rudy Toledo, National Master and National Arbiter, and Event Executive Officer of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, said the ongoing schools and youth chess tournament at the city hall is the biggest youth & schools chess tourney with almost 300 players from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
Toledo, who said that participants are the “cream of the crop of young players”, expressed gratitude to Mayor Tongson and the City of Himamaylan for sponsoring and hosting the national chess event.
“This not only boosts the sports program of the government but also showcases the potential and capability of Himamaylan in hosting big events,” Toledo also said.
Toledo said the event is In coordination with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC). “We will endorse the names of winners to the PSC and POC for support during international competitions. This is also sanctioned by the World Chess Federation.”*
