Provincial championships for various sports events happening this week

It’s another jam-packed week for the Negros Occidental Provincial Government and the Provincial Sports Office as they wrap up their sports activities for 2022.

Among the list of activities for this week are the Governor’s Cup 2 on 2 Chess Team Championship, ABANSE NEGRENSE Swimming Tournament Provincial Championship, Governor’s Cup Provincial Boxing Tournament, ABANSE NEGRENSE Badminton Tournament Provincial Championship, and the Governor’s Cup 5X5 Basketball Tournament.

Are you interested in some abstract strategy game? If yes, then watch out for the Governor’s Cup 2 on 2 Chess Team Championship on December 8 at the Social Hall of the Provincial Capitol Building. The battle of the minds will start at 9 AM.

Apart from the quest for the next Provincial Grandmaster, Negrense swimmers from the Northern and Southern Negros Districts are set to compete for the championship title in the ABANSE NEGRENSE Swimming Tournament Provincial Championship on December 8 at the Sta. Fe Resort in Brgy. Granada, Bacolod City. The tournament will start at 7:30 in the morning and the awarding ceremony will be at 4:00 PM.

Furthermore, badminton enthusiasts will surely gather at the Po Hang Badminton Court for the ABANSE NEGRENSE Badminton Tournament (Provincial Championship) on December 10, 2022 (Saturday). The opening ceremony will commence at 9 AM and will reportedly be led by Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose V. Lacson.

Aspiring young boxing champs from all over the province, on the other hand, are also slated to showcase their skills at the Governor’s Cup Provincial Boxing Tournament – Finals. It will be held at the Municipal Covered Court of Don Salvador Benedicto.

The Semi-Final bouts will be on December 9 (Friday) while the Final matches will be on the following day, December 10. Boxing fans will be thrilled to hear that Four Division World Champion and Longest Reigning Filipino World Champ Donnie “Ahas” Nietes will reportedly make a special appearance at the tournament.

Finally, all the provincial championships will end with the Governor’s Cup 5X5 Basketball Tournament (A Tribute to Dodong Bascon’s Contributions to Negros Basketball) on December 10 at the STI-West Negros University (STI-WNU) Gymnasium at 1 PM. It will be a home-court advantage for the STI-WNU team as they play against Dumaguete City for the championship title.

All these tournaments are part of Gov. Bong Lacson’s sports initiative, the ABANSE NEGRENSE Grassroots Sports Development Programs. Through this advocacy, the sports-loving governor aims to inspire, encourage, and motivate our local youth to develop and improve their skills and abilities in sports. Gov.
