Bago, Sagay capture titles in Gov. Cup football prov’l championship
The Negros Occidental Provincial Government and the Provincial Sports Office (PSO) successfully wrapped up the Governor’s Cup Football Provincial Championship at the Pana-ad Park and Stadium on Nov. 12-13, 2022.
The cities of Bago and Sagay were hailed champions in the 17-under (Born 2005) and 12-under (Born 2005) categories, respectively.
For the 17-under (Born 2005) category, Bago City defeated the University of Saint La Salle Football Club (USLS FC) after scoring 4-3. The USLS team landed second, and the municipality of Pontevedra ranked third.
The Sagay City 12-under (Born 2010) team championed the match by winning five goals against the Dolphins Football Club’s two, placing them in second place. The city of San Carlos landed third place.
Apart from the team standings, the outstanding players received special awards. For the 17-under (Born 2005) category, Christian Renson of Bago City received the Best Striker award after scoring eight goals.
Bago City’s Earl Sinconiegue took the Best Midfielder, La Salle’s Peter Olid was named the Best Defender, and Ashley Sacapaño of Bago City earned the Best Goalkeeper and the Most Valuable Player recognitions.
For the 12-under (Born 2010) category, Kier Lorenz Martos was the Best Striker with 18 recorded goals. John Paul Nidar was the Best Midfielder, Macky Marquez was the Best Defender, JC Baloco earned the Best Goalkeeper title, and Zhaan Roqino was named the Most Valuable Player. All the special awardees in the 12-under category came from the Sagay City team.
Blessed with good weather and fantastic support from various local government units, coaches, and players, the Governor’s Cup Football Provincial Championship was a great success. Even though the teams played competitive matches throughout the day, they all demonstrated good sportsmanship and camaraderie.
The tournament was part of the ABANSE NEGRENSE grassroots sports development programs of Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose V. Lacson through the Provincial Sports Office. Through these programs, Gov. Bong Lacson hopes to provide more opportunities for the Negrense youth to foster their interests and abilities in various sports activities.* (PSO)
