PSO meets with coaches ahead of 5X5 b-ball tourney
The Provincial Sports Office (PSO) is preparing for the upcoming Governor’s Cup 5-on-5 Basketball Tournament (A Tribute to Dodong Bascon’s Contributions to Negros Basketball) next month. For that reason, PSO Head Mr. Anthony Carlo Agustin recently convened a meeting with several basketball coaches all over the province.
The conference took place on Friday, Oct. 14 at Maria Kusina Familia at 24th Lacson St., Bacolod City. The agenda discussed was the ground rules of the tournament, the confirmation of intention to participate, and the drawing of lots for the bracketing of the participating teams.
Originally, the PSO intended to limit the number of participants to 8 teams only but considering the LGUs and the schools that were interested in joining, Mr. Agustin added 2 more teams. The total and maximum number of teams to participate in the 5X5 tournament was changed to 10 teams.
The teams who confirmed their participation were Cadiz City, Dumaguete City, Talisay City, University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, and Colegio de San Agustin-Bacolod for the Bracket A category. Bracket B includes Silay Cty, La Consolacion College, STI-West Negros University, and Bago City.
There is one last slot remaining for interested participants. However, it will be on a “first-come, first-served” basis. As previously announced, registration for this tournament is free.
Meanwhile, the tournament is in honor of the late Oscar “Dodong” Bascon. Mr. Bascon was hailed for his contributions as one of the pillars of basketball in the province of Negros.
It is open to all bona fide and 21-under (born 2001) college students. The playoffs for the Governor’s Cup 5-on-5 Basketball Tournament will commence on Nov. 12, 2022, in the city of Talisay.
The deadline for the confirmation of participation is on Oct. 21, 2022. Moreover, another meeting with the coaches is set on Oct. 19, 10 am at the Social Hall of the Negros Occidental Provincial Capitol.
The tournament is among the ABANSE NEGRENSE Sports Programs of the PSO this last quarter of the year. It is part of the initiative led by Governor Eugenio Jose V. Lacson to promote grassroots sports development among our Negrense youth.* (PSO)
