Gov’t geologists to inspect ground cracks, erosions in Moises Padilla

Geologists from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) will inspect the ground cracks in Sitio Manaol, Barangay Quintin Remo, Moises Padilla, Negros Occidental to determine whether those are caused by soil erosion and liquefaction that put to danger the lives of the people living in the area.

Mayor Ella Garcia-Yulo has already asked MGB to send a team of geologists to check.

Earlier, Mayor Garcia-Yulo went to the area and inspected the situation and ordered the evacuation of residents either to their relatives or to the town’s evacuation center.

The cracks, which first appeared in 2009, further widened and extended to another sitio due to incessant rains in recent weeks.

There is an allegation that there might be a fault line in the area although there is reportedly no definite connection yet with the restiveness of Kanlaon volcano.

Residents were advised by the municipal government to stay away from the place for the meantime until geologists can determine that the area is safe for their return.* (EYA)
