Cleanup of Bacolod public markets pushed

Newly-assigned Chairperson of the Committee on Markets and Slaughterhouse, Councilor Celia Matea Flor filed a resolution to get the ball rolling on the cleanup of Bacolod City’s major markets: Libertad, Burgos, and Central Market.

On her first few days back in the Bacolod City Council, Councilor Flor visited and saw the dreadful situation of the city’s major markets.

Among the problems are the clogged pipelines and drainage systems in and surrounding the markets, pools of dirty and murky water, garbage, and the overall unsanitary situation that cause flooding, renders pathways impassable, and pose as health hazards for both vendors and customers as experienced by the market-going population, a statement from Sangguniang Panlungsod member said.

Councilor Flor also said: “We need to change this. Let us help each other to make our markets clean. We should enforce discipline and cleanliness so that we can have public markets we can boast about.”

As chair of the Committee on Markets and Slaughterhouse, she saw it fit to file a resolution enjoining the City Engineer’s Office (CEO), City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (DRRMO), and General Services Office (GSO) to assist the market administrations to conduct immediate cleaning, flushing, de-clogging, dredging, and repair of pipelines, drainage, and surroundings of Libertad, Burgos, and Central Markets. This action is seen as a stop-gap measure pending the full rehabilitation of the said markets, according to Mayor Albee Benitez’ agenda.* (PPR)
