Crimes in Bacolod down by 26.8% in May

Intensified police initiated operations and prevention measures brought down crimes here by 26.89 percent in May, according to a report of the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO).

Data showed that during the period May 1 to 31, there were 87 incidents recorded, lower by 32, compared to 119 logged during the fifth month in the previous year.

Col. Thomas Joseph Martir, police city director, said crime prevention has always been the priority of the BCPO to continue making Bacolod peaceful and orderly.

“We encourage everyone to keep supporting the efforts to achieve a better Bacolod to live and to do business,” he added.

The 87 crimes comprised 66 categorized under the peace and order index while 21 under the public safety index.

Crimes included in the peace and order index are those that reflect the crime situation in a particular community while those under the public safety index cover vehicular incidents such as those resulting in homicide, physical injury, and property damage.

In May, index crimes or the eight focus crimes dropped by 33.33 percent – from 24 incidents last year to only 16 this year.

The eight focus crimes include murder, homicide, physical injury, robbery, theft, vehicle theft, motorcycle theft, and rape.

Non-index crimes, which refer to violations of special laws, decreased from 95 to only 71, or by 25.26 percent.

Regular enhanced managing police operations allows to discuss, address and apply appropriate and target-specific interventions in the reduction of crimes especially the eight focus crimes, the report added.* (Nanette Guadalquiver, PNA)
