Only 83% of Negros Occidental voters cast votes on May 9

May 17, 2022

Only 83 percent of registered voters in the province of Negros Occidental cast their votes during the May 9 elections.

There are a total of 1.6 million voters in the province, excluding that of Bacolod City, but only about 1.3 million voters or 83 percent cast their votes, Atty. Roberto Salazar, provincial election officer, said today, May 17.

Salazar said the data is based on the certificates of canvass generated by the Consolidation and Canvassing System (CCS) of the Commission on Election (COMELEC).

He also said that he is still waiting for a report “from the ground… report on how many voters actually voted and signed,” he added.

Salazar, however could not say if the voter turn-out for this year’s election increased as compared to the 2016 elections. “Usually there is high voter turnout if is a presidential election,” he said.

Data from the COMELEC website showed that in 2016 voter turnout was at 83.95 percent or 1,396, 442 Negrenses out of the 1,663,495 registered voters.* (EYA)
