Pork prices up in province despite no shortage

March 16, 2022

The prices of pork in Negros Occidental have gone up, although the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) denied that there is lack of supply in the province.

Prices of pork now range from P220 to P300 a kilo.

PVO head Dr. Renante Decena said there is no problem with supply in the province and they are even shipping out excess pork to neighboring Iloilo province, Luzon, and other areas in the country.

Decena blamed the recent pork price increases to the recent oil price hikes, along with an increase in the price of feeds and the raw materials needed for its production.

Among raw materials needed for the production of pork feeds are sunflower oil, soy beans, and corn oil.

The PVO head pointed out that one of the world’s primary producers of sunflower oil is Ukraine which is currently being invaded by Russia.

The Sunflower is known to be the national flower of Ukraine, and the eastern European country is also well-known as a producer of soybeans.

Decena said based on their weekly monitoring of other meat products in the province, even the price of cara beef has increased by P3.49 and is now running at P295.

Beef products, meanwhile, are now running at P302 per kilo, a P1.98 increase.

Pork price is averaging at P264 per kilo, a price increase of P4.49; while dressed chicken is running at P200 per kilo, a price hike of P1.74.

Decena added that the P300 pork price is currently being monitored in the cities of Talisay and San Carlos, and town of Hinigaran, while P220 pork price was monitored in the town of Ilog.*
