Negros Island Region’s revival backed by Sen. Migz, Gov. Bong, VG Jeffrey
More national and local officials are endorsing moves to revive the Negros Island Region (NIR).
Senator Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri said the revival of the defunct one-island region will be among his priority legislations.
Zubiri, whose family is from Negros Occidental, was in Panay and Negros islands over the weekend to check programs and projects he either initiated or supported in the provinces of Western Visayas.
During a press conference at Stone Hill Suites in Bacolod yesterday Nov. 13, Zubiri said that the new administration next year will hopefully agree to pass his legislation of re-creating NIR under a law.
With Governor Eugenio Jose “Bong” Lacson and Vice Governor Jeffrey Ferrer, he said that he will refile his NIR bill “come hell or high water.”
“We have enough allies in the Senate that will push for this,” he said.
“I was disappointed when the executive order that created the NIR was vetoed. That is why it is important that there should be a law so that whoever sits as President we will have NIR,” he pointed out.
LACSON & FERRER
For his part, Gov. Lacson said that he is calling on all Negrenses “to make it a condition that we will only consider a candidate if the revival of the NIR is in their platform.”
Vice Gov. Ferrer, meanwhile said that if a candidate will not support the NIR “I will campaign against him.”
“If they campaign in Negros, let us ask them if they support moves to revive NIR one not,” he said.*
