VMC widens canal for flood control

September 22, 2021

Victorias Milling Company recently completed the clearing, widening and deepening of the canal that spans between New Barrio in Brgy. 16A and Canetown Subdivision in Brgy. 19A in Victorias City for flood prevention especially with the advent of the rainy season.

Joseph George Sta. Ana, head of VMC’s Civil and Design Construction said that they were able to double the size of the canal.

“Before the construction, the canal dimensions were from 1 to 2 meters wide with a depth of 2 to 2.5 meters and 430 meters long. After the civil works, we doubled the canal size to 3 to 4 meters, and 3 to 3.5 meters deep,” Sta. Ana said.

Canetown Kagawad Edmund Liza said they are thankful for the canal-widening project as “this will surely help the flooding problem that has greatly affected our community.”

Liza added that he will mobilize their neighbourhood to ensure its maintenance and will seek the help of the local government unit to help in the needed riprapping of the area.

Kagawad Brady Sombero on the other hand said this is “very timely” as they are usually beset with flooding problems “especially from October to February when the rains come. The clearing and widening of the canal have eased the anxiety of our residents in flood-prone areas.”

“We hope and pray that the flood preventive measures that were implemented will finally put an end to the flooding we have been experiencing,” Sombero added.*
