The Bacolod City government is honoring its senior citizens by celebrating four women who have reached the remarkable milestone of 100 years old: Lourdes Panisales of Barangay Tangub, Margarita V. Sentecera of Barangay Alijis, Nena Celis Pretta of Barangay Estefania, and Lourdes Abaygar of Barangay Taculing. Through the Centenarian Benefit Program, the city recognizes their resilience, discipline, and enduring contributions to the community.

On February 25, the city delivered ₱90,000 to Lourdes Abaygar, bringing her total incentive to ₱100,000 after she previously received ₱10,000 through the ladderized centenarian program. A former bookkeeper, she has lived a life of discipline and moderation, maintaining a balanced diet of fish, vegetables, and fruits since her youth. Her life exemplifies how consistent habits, self-care, and devotion to family and community can sustain a long and meaningful life.

Theresa Mercado, 69-year-old daughter of Lourdes Abaygar, shared that the timely payout will help the family provide additional care for both her mother—who is living with dementia—and her 98-year-old aunt, Anita Vinco, who resides in the same household. “This support will help us provide extra care, especially at night, and ensure their comfort and safety,” she said, highlighting the importance of the city’s assistance for families managing multiple elderly members.

Earlier this year, Lourdes Panisales received her full ₱100,000 benefit on January 27, 2026. Margarita V. Sentecera completed her full ₱100,000 incentive on February 13, 2026, after previously receiving ₱10,000. Born and raised as a farmer in Barangay Feliza, Margarita spent her life cultivating the land and raising her family, surviving on the fruits and vegetables they grew. Even at 100, she remains cheerful and energetic, enjoying simple pleasures such as a bottle of beer every late afternoon—a small joy that brings laughter and warmth to her daily routine. Reflecting on her life, she shared, “I am grateful that I have reached this stage, that I have lived to this age,” highlighting her gratitude for her journey and experiences.

Nena Celis Pretta received her ₱100,000 check on February 4, 2026. She fondly recalled growing up in a simpler Bacolod, surrounded by open spaces and rural landscapes. Now living with arthritis, she is lovingly cared for by her niece—whom she raised herself. Her life demonstrates the importance of nurturing family bonds, contentment, and moderation—lessons that have guided her through a century of life.

According to the Department of Social Services and Development (DSSD), as of February 2026, the city has released four centenarian payouts this year. Benefits for Lourdes Panisales and Nena Pretta were charged to the 2025 budget, while incentives for Margarita V. Sentecera and Lourdes Abaygar are funded under the 2026 allocation. In total, 10 centenarian payouts were completed under the 2025 budget, underscoring the city’s ongoing dedication to honoring and supporting its elderly citizens.

Through the Centenarian Benefit Program and other elder support initiatives, the Bacolod City Government remains committed to recognizing, caring for, and celebrating its senior citizens—ensuring that their wisdom, values, and contributions are cherished for generations to come.* (BCCO text & photos)
