December 21, 2025

The City Government of Bacolod officially launched the 1st Mayor Greg Gasataya Bacolod Invitational Karatedo Competition, bringing together more than 300 young karatekas from various schools and clubs across the country.

Student-athletes aged 6 to 25 years old competed in kata and kumite events under novice and advanced categories at SM City Bacolod.

Mayor Greg Gasataya emphasized the importance of developing grassroots sports competitions to encourage greater youth participation, as the city prepares to host major national events, including the Batang Pinoy next year.

“We’ve been doing all the preparations in line with hosting Batang Pinoy in October 2026,” Gasataya said, reiterating the city’s continued commitment to supporting karatedo and other sports programs.

Organized by Karatedo Pilipinas Inc. (KPI), the event also aims to hone and discover promising talents while promoting discipline, sportsmanship, and martial arts excellence.

Mayor Gasataya further announced a new initiative to support local athletes, providing a ₱300 daily training and uniform allowance for one month, with additional incentives for those who continue to represent Bacolod City in regional competitions. “Support for our athletes should start at the local level, especially when it comes to grassroots development,” the mayor added.

KPI Referee Council Chairman Juan Carlos “Chino” Veguillas expressed his gratitude for the city government’s strong support, noting Bacolod’s growing stature as a regional sports hub.

“This is good for tourism. I believe in Bacolod’s potential, and I hope this competition will continue annually,” Veguillas said.

Local karatedo instructor and coach Elan Delfin of the International Shotokan Karate Federation echoed Veguillas’ sentiments, thanking Mayor Gasataya for his sustained support of the sport since his time in Congress.

“Many of our local athletes, coaches, and instructors are grateful for the opportunity to showcase our talents and represent the city in national and international competitions,” Delfin said.
