This year, EB Magalona copped one of the most coveted awards before the year concludes – a Child-Friendly Municipality – from the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).

The newest distinction spelled how the leadership of Mayor Matthew Louis Malacon puts premium care on protecting children, and promoting their rights through policies, programs and services for the advancement of their welfare.

The Child-Friendly plum, Malacon said, is a validation how his administration ensures and nutures a safe space for children in their town.

EB Magalona was among the 17 local government units in Negros Occidental or 79 localities in Region 6 recognized as passers for 2024 Seal of Child-Friendly Local Governance (SCFLG) award.

Malacon said that beyond politics, he feels the needs for a safer environment for children in EB Magalona.

“With so many challenges now confronting children, including abuse – physical or online – we have no choice, but to protect them at all costs,” he said. “Thus, it is central in my administration to have focused policies strengthening children’s protection no matter what happens.”

Naming EB Magalona as one among the local goverments in Negros Occidental to receive SCFLG is an attestation of how the town’s local governance prioritizes children.

This recognition indeed reflects the municipality’s broader commitment to transparency, accountability, and inclusive development, aligning with DILG standards for child-friendly governance, the mayor said, adding, “Our child-centered governance really bore fruit.”

Meanwhile, Malacon said the SCFLG will also motivate them to sustain and expand programs that truly benefit young people in EB Magalona.*
